Buying a second hand car

It goes without saying, but never buy a car without thoroughly checking it over first. eBay and Gumtree are great places to look for second hand cars, but never buy one without checking it out in person. If you don’t know a lot about cars, ask someone that does to join you. Buying a second hand car without conducting the proper checks could end up costing you a lot of money. It could fail the MOT and not be roadworthy without expensive repairs - or even worse, it could just be a dangerous car with bald tyres or faulty breaks, so always check before you hand over any cash.

As we mentioned, Gumtree is one of the best places to look for a second hand car. You can base your search on location, price, car make, fuel type, transmission, engine size, body type, age and mileage. Simply click on a car and you will see photos, a brief description and a way to contact the owner. There are thousands of cars on Gumtree because sellers don't have to pay to place adverts. This means there is a great selection for you, the buyer.

Once you find a car you like, contact the owner to find out if it is still available (many sellers forget to take the ad down once the car has been sold). Don’t look at a car in the dark or in the rain, as you won’t be able to get a good look and could miss dents or scratches that would be obvious in better light.

Take the car for a test drive to see if you like it and if it is mechanically sound. If you are confident enough, haggle - many people do, especially with second hand cars.

Be sure to check the V5 vehicle registration document and don’t be pressured into buying until you're confident about your decision.
