Curious about how penalty points affect you?

Everyone who is a driver in the United Kingdom needs to be familiar with the penalty points system and how it can affect their driving licence, their insurance and most importantly, their safety on the road.

Today we're going to take a look at some of the most common penalty point offences, how to avoid picking them up and how you can have old points removed.

How do penalty points work?

The penalty point system is actually quite straight forward. There are a number of predetermined driving offences that carry punishment of penalty points on your drivers licence. Once added, these penalty points remain there for three years, apart from drink driving related penalty points which must remain on your license for a total of ten years.

If in any three year period you accumulate twelve or more penalty points, you will be disqualified from driving for a set period of time. The duration of the ban will depend on the kind of offences you have racked up, but it is usually in the region of six months.

One thing that is worth remembering is that the twelve point mark is not always a hard and fast rule. It is possible that you can appeal based on the type of penalty points you have and the circumstances under which you accumulated them.

Most common penalty point offences

By far the most common offence that carries penalty points is speeding. Depending on the severity of the offence, speeding can carry between three and six penalty points per offence.

Other common offences include failing to stop after an accident (five to ten points), driving without due care and attention (three to nine points), using a vehicle with defective tyres (three points), dangerous driving (three to eleven points) and driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence.
