Sell your car faster with our tips

Selling your car is really simple, but there are things you can do to get it sold faster. Here are a few tips to help sell your car quickly and at a good price.

Firstly renew the MOT: many cars you see for sale have no tax or MOT and this will put buyers right off, so ensure it has a good amount of time left on the MOT. It is much easier to sell a car with 9 to 12 months MOT on it than if the MOT is about to run out.

Secondly, it is a bit of a no brainer, but clean the car - inside and outside. When someone comes to look at a car, you will want to show it off at its best so get it gleaming! Most people won’t be put off by dirty cars, but in the back of their mind they will be thinking that it’s not well looked after and there could be scratches hidden under the dirt.

Now you have it spotless, take photos. Make sure you get photos straight on in front, the sides, the rear and a photo of the dash. A photo of the dash will go a long way, especially if you are selling a car with good mileage. Also it is important that the photos are taken during the day in fair weather - if the picture quality is bad, buyers may assume you are trying to hide dents and scratches.

Now you have it clean and photographed, advertise. Tell your friends, use Facebook and Gumtree... Get word out that you are selling your car.

Be honest when describing the car - if you say there are no dents and a buyer comes and sees a huge dent, they will be annoyed you lied to them and wasted their time. Don’t advertise all the problems in bold print, but do be honest.

To decide a price, have a look at similar cars for sale. If your price is higher than the same car with less miles and more MOT and tax, you probably won’t even get a phone call. Add a bit to the price if your car is in better condition and take some off if it is in worse condition. Be prepared to haggle - many buyers will try to haggle with you. Aim to get close to the asking price. If their offer is too low, just say no.
