Advantages and disadvantages of fossil fuels

Fossil fuels like natural gases, oil and coal are the building blocks from which a lot of our fuels are created. We all rely on fossil fuels to power our cars and heat our homes, as it’s more than likely that the power station that produces the electricity is powered by fossil fuels. Fossil fuels are taken from the earth and quickly changed into usable fuels but they take millions of years to create within the earth as they’re little more than the accumulated remains of living organisms that were buried millions of years ago.

Advantages

Fossil fuels have tremendous advantages over other sources of fuel. Their ability to generate large quantities of electricity at one location makes fossil fuels ideal for domestic electricity needs. They’re also easy to find, and material like coal is actually inexpensive at the moment because it’s abundant right now. The transportation of these fuels through pipes is an easy task thanks to the existing infrastructure in place around the world, and power plants that use fossil fuels can be constructed in almost any area.

Disadvantages

The supply isn’t limitless which is why the question of renewable fuels always comes up nowadays. Pollution is another issue that occurs when fossil fuels are used. The greenhouse effect created by carbon emissions means that governments have to take a close look at replacing this sort of fuel. In addition to this, when coal’s burnt it creates sulphur dioxide which contributes to a phenomenon called Acid Rain. Truck and train loads of fuel are needed to power the world’s fossil fuel power stations which takes away a lot of the facility’s advantages. When natural gas is used in a power station, a horrible odour is created. The other major issue is that crude oil can be spilt when oil tankers go into the sea. Crude oil has toxic chemicals within it so the damage isn’t just felt by sea-life but by anyone and anything within close proximity to the disaster.
