Who provides the best breakdown cover in the UK in 2014?

If you aren't already a member of a breakdown recovery firm through a bolt-on to your car insurance policy, through your bank account or thanks to your hire purchase agreement, you'll probably want to find out which roadside recovery firm provides the best breakdown cover in the UK in 2014.

The big three

There are three firms that everyone thinks of when they're looking for roadside assistance: RAC, the AA and Greenflag.

RAC

If your car leaves you stranded on the side of the road, you'll want to know that you're in safe hands, which is why most motorists choose one of the big three firms for car breakdown cover. The RAC breakdown cover is available for under £30 a year and they have more patrols per member than any other roadside recovery firm. They offer several different types of cover. The basic cover will get a driver out to you if you breakdown during a journey but they won't come out if your car fails to start outside your home.

The AA

Breakdown cover from the AA is also available for under £30. The AA are the Which? top recommended provider for breakdown cover and they already have 14 million members. The free AA App that helps their technician find you quickly is also a big selling point.

Greenflag

The basic package from Greenflag is a few pounds less than their rivals but the biggest difference comes in what they include. Greenflag don't charge extra if your car needs removing due to snow or flooding, and with the exception of the basic package, there's no additional cost for those times when the wrong fuel is put into a vehicle, which is something that happens to approximately 150,000 motorists each year.

Others

The big three dominate the market but there are other firms who can claim to be the best breakdown cover providers in the UK for 2014.

Cheaper providers

The Green Insurance Company are probably the cheapest and could well be the best breakdown cover providers in the UK for 2014 depending on what you're looking for. They have a network of 5,000 mechanics nationwide and offer their service from £17, Unfortunately, there's not enough information available to make an informed choice as to whether they, or any other firm outside of the big three, can get you back on the road as quickly as the three major players.
