Big bucks for Bang Bang

You wouldn't rely on it to get to the shops and back, but the star car of 1968 film Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is part of both motoring and cinematic history. After recently going under the hammer in the States, our fine four fendered friend fetched £500,000.

However, this was well short of the car's estimated value of $1m-$2m. Chitty was always intended to be a fully functioning vehicle, and contains a 3 litre V6 engine under its bonnet.

For the film, five cars were created, but this is the only one you can drive, and was registered with the famous Gen II numberplate that novelist Ian Fleming gave to it in the novel on which the film was based.

Some of the car's snazzy features include an aluminium bonnet and a dash board that was a remnant from a British World War 1 fighter place.
