Bye Bye CD player

What did the poor CD do to deserve such disloyal treatment from us? It's a question Ford aren't prepared to ponder, as it plans to brutally srap CD players in future models, and instead will favour digital music players like iPods.

Of course there's no sentimentality behind the decision, which has been made on one basis and one basis only – sales. While CD sales fell 35 percent between 2006 and 2010, downloads increased seven-fold.

'In-car entertainment technology is moving digital more rapidly than almost any other element of the vehicle experience," said Ford's Sheryl Connelly. 'The in-car CD player – much like pay telephones – is destined to fade away in the face of exciting new technology.'

So what will happen to the empty space where the humble CD player once lay? It's rumoured that Ford are working on somethin it calls a Sync, a combination of Multiple USB ports, SD card slots, Bluetooth connectivity and RCA plugs strewn across the dashboard.
