Before you book

You’ll need to check gov.uk for the driving test booking service. The online service is available between 6am and 11:40pm each day. But before you book you’ll need to make sure that you’ve got your Great Britain or Northern Ireland driving licence number to hand and a debit or credit card. You won’t need your driving instructor’s personal reference number to book the test but if you have it, you’ll be able to check their availability.

The online form

The application process takes around 15 minutes to complete so make sure you’ve got enough time. There are 8 stages to the application process, most of which only need you to make one selection. You’ll be asked which test centre you’d like to use. If you’re not sure where your local one’s based, you can put your postcode into dft.gov.uk to get that information.

Changing the time or date

Once you’ve arranged the test you can change the time and date of it if you need to. If you give at least 3 working days’ notice, you won’t be charged for the change. But if you give less than 3 days’ notice, you’ll have to pay a second charge for the test. You can change the date up to 6 times before the original application is automatically cancelled. As with the application process, you can make this change through gov.uk.

Help with your booking
