The Lamborghini Egoista “selfish” concept
The Lamborghini Egoista concept car was unveiled at a private party organised to mark the 50th anniversary of Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A., the Italian luxury sports cars manufacturer. Lamborghini seemed to have thrown the party for itself as only a thousand invitees were present. From what we glean of the Egoista, this is an “intentionally extreme and unusual vehicle with absolutely unique characteristics."
It’s difficult not to be a bit cynical about the Lamborghini Egoista concept created by Volkswagen Group Design team. Walter De Silva, Head of Volkswagen Group Design, said of the Lamborghini Egoista: "This is a car made for one person only, to allow them to have fun and express their personality to the maximum. It is designed purely for hyper-sophisticated people who want only the most extreme and special things in the world. It represents hedonism taken to the extreme; it is a car without compromises, in a word: egoista (translated: selfish from Italian)."
The vehicle is characterised by a highly muscular structure with solid and empty areas fitted together perfectly to give unprecedented vigor and strength. The bodywork, made from lightweight materials like aluminum and carbon-fiber, are stylised on the sides with the characteristic profile of a raging bull with its horns lowered ready to charge. LED clearance lights complete an overall look similar to a jet fighter more than a road vehicle.
The cockpit is even more outrageous. It is designed like a tailor-made suit for the driver with a removable unit that combines perfectly with the rest of the vehicle to give a surreal mechanical and aerodynamic assembly. Inspiration for the cockpit design comes from the Apache helicopter whose cockpit can be ejected in an emergency.
De Silva explained: "The cockpit, made completely of carbon fiber and aluminum, represents a sort of survival cell, allowing the driver to isolate and protect themselves from external elements. We kept an eye on the future when designing the Egoista, with the idea that its cockpit could have been taken from a jet aircraft and integrated into a road vehicle, to provide a different travel option."
Amazingly, to get out of the vehicle, the driver must remove the steering wheel and rest it on the dashboard and then open the dome with an electronic command before he or she can swing out.
The Lamborghini Egoista is pure extreme. It is a vehicle resplendent in its unique and solitary characteristics. Obviously, this is a vehicle designed for the few. In fact, this is probably a car that Lamborghini only designed for itself; a fantasy car no one can ever really own that will remain a dream for everybody. But, if you somehow ever get a hold of it, it will give you the ultimate adrenaline rush on the road.
