McLaren is one of the most successful and well known teams in Formula One racing. Read on for all you need to know on the MacLaren Formula One team.


McLaren is a British Formula One team that was founded by New Zealander Bruce McLaren in 1963. They are the second oldest team in the championship after Ferrari. McLaren currently use a Mercedes-Benz engine and have Pirelli tyres. They use Mobil fuel.


McLaren have had some of the best Formula One drivers in the world down through the years. Emerson Fittipaldi won the first drivers championship for McLaren in 1974. The legendary Ayrton Senna was world champion in 1988, 1990 and 1991. Alain Prost also won the drivers’ championship in 1989. Lewis Hamilton joined the team in 2007. With the signing of Jenson Button in 2010, McLaren now have the top two British Formula One drivers.

Formula One World Championship Career

The McLaren Formula One team is one of the most successful teams in motor racing, having won 171 races, 12 drivers' championships and 8 constructors' championships. The team won its first Grand Prix in Belgium in 1968. In 1974 Emerson Fittipaldi joined the team and they won their first drivers' championship and constructors' championship. They achieved this double a further 7 times in 1984, 1985, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991 and 1998. McLaren's best period was when they won the drivers’ championship four times in a row from 1988 to 1991. Their most recent success has been Lewis Hamilton winning the drivers’ championship in 2008.
