The new Mercedes A 45 AMG marks a new beginning for Mercedes and AMG. The new top of the range A-Class is powered by a new turbocharged 2.0-litre engine producing 360 horsepower, which is the most powerful four-cylinder production unit in the world. This mighty engine develops 360 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 450 Nm of peak torque between 2,250 and 5,000 rpm, and is mated to the familiar AMG 4Matic all-wheel drive system and to a 7-speed AMG Speedshift dual clutch transmission.
What Mercedes-AMG is attempting to do is to create a high-performing vehicle that fits in a market previously unexplored, which is also less exclusive and expensive than the current AMG range. The German brand quotes a 0 -100 km/h (0 - 62 mph) sprint time of 4.6 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of about 250 km/h (155 mph).
Mercedes-AMG has been able to provide such impressive figures thanks to a high-tech package, which includes a high-performance BlueDIRECT AMG 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engine characterised by spray-guided direct petrol injection via piezo injectors positioned centrally in the four combustion chambers. Lower exhaust emissions are granted by a combination of multiple fuel injection and multiple spark ignition. Also gravity-die sandcast all-aluminium crankcase, weight-optimised crank assembly with forged steel crankshaft and forged pistons with friction-optimised piston rings, air-water charge air cooling, generator management and ECO start/stop function.
The A 45 AMG represents the “AMG Performance 50″ strategy for the future, which will culminate with the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of Mercedes-AMG GmbH in 2017. This sensational car is not just performance oriented, is also looking at high efficiency standards as a key-factor: the powerful engine complies with the Euro 6 emissions regulations and consumes just 6.9 litres per 100 km on combined cycle, with CO2 emissions rated at 161 grams per km.
Mercedes A 45 AMG features a three-link front suspension provided with stiffer steering knuckles and new elastokinematics, while the newly developed four-link rear axle with strut bearings were adapted for maximum driving dynamics, stability and control. The A 45 AMG also comes with twin-spoke AMG alloy wheels painted in titanium grey with a high-sheen finish and wrapped in 235/40 R 18 tyres as standard.
A very special feature has to be the “Momentary M mode“, designed to enhance dynamic performance and driving pleasure. When opting for C (Controlled Efficiency) and S (Sport) mode, the driver can activate manual mode (”M”) without removing the hands from the steering wheel, just pressing “up” or “down” once on the shift paddle. In “Momentary M mode” is possible to experience manual mode gear-shifting dynamism and performance in all of the automatic driving programmes, with also automatic up- and down-shifting.
The exterior design is sporty and muscular, the nose of the car is characterised by matt titanium grey AMG “twin blade” radiator grille and cross strut in the AMG front bumper, also black surroundings distinguish the large cooling air intakes at the sides. The lateral part of the new A 45 AMG features side sill panels with matt titanium grey inserts; the rear bumper with air outlet openings at the sides comes with a matt titanium grey finished diffuser, while two square chrome-plated tailpipes add character to the vehicle's bold design.
The world première of the new A 45 AMG is scheduled for March (7th – 17th) at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. The car will be launched in Germany in June, while sales release date will be 8th April 2013.
