Mitsubishi Decides to Pull Out of Dakar Rally
Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) has decided to withdraw its racing team from the prestigious Dakar Rally, the Dakar Series, and all cross-country rallies for the 2009 season.
Of their twenty-six entries that have raced in the Dakar Rallies, Mitsubishi Motors won the annual event twelve times, including an incredible seven consecutive victories led by its flagship SUV, the Pajero. By participating in the Dakar cross-country competition, the company has also developed state-of-the-art 4WD technology that has trickled down to its production vehicles, making a name for durability and off-road performance.
Like its fellow Japanese vehicle makers—Honda, Kawasaki and Subaru, Mitsubishi is feeling the bite from the sudden drop in consumer spending in the auto and bike markets. The company claims that it needs to focus its resources more tightly to survive the recession.
