Vauxhall has just announced the arrival of the new VXR8 Tourer. It’s a quick estate car in the mould of the Audi RS6 Avant, Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG and their own Insignia VXR Sports. The new machine is based on the HSV Clubsport R8 Tourer, an Australian car, and is set to become the third Holden model to join Vauxhall’s range.
When it’s released it will sit alongside the tyre shredding VXR8 and the Maloo pickup truck but couple V8 power with the space and comfort of an estate car. Aside from being the first time that the VXR8 has been offered with an estate back, this machine will also be the fastest Vauxhall estate ever built. It will also offer more load space than any other estate machine currently available in the UK.
Power comes from a 6.2 litre LS3 V-8 motor that pumps out 431 hp. The power's worked through a six speed manual gearbox and a limited slip differential. There’s a 0–62 mph time of 4.9 seconds and the top speed has been electronically limited to 155 mph. Vauxhall describe the launch control system as one that “helps drivers make best use of the Tourer’s huge torque during brisk acceleration” and the company has also confirmed that the new machine will be covered by their 100,000 mile or lifetime warranty.
Inside the cabin there’s leather upholstery, Bluetooth connectivity and climate control. Vauxhall has also included the Enhanced Driver Interface, which allows telemetry to be streamed in real time to the cabin’s screen.
The price has been set at £49,500, which is very good value for money when compared with a rival like the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG that’s £75,510. The Mercedes is a little quicker and there’s a premium paid for the brand, but all things considered the Vauxhall VXR8 Tourer will be a great car.
