The fastest cars in F1 history

With F1 the fastest car isn’t always the latest one because from time to tine rule changes like narrow track and grooved tyres force the constructors to make slower machines. We’ve taken a look at some of the sport’s records.

The short lived BAR team can also claim to have produced the fastest F1 machine of all time. Their 2005 challenger was modified and put to the test at Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, USA where it achieved an aggregate speed of 220.571mph over two runs of a measured mile.

The BMW-powered Benetton B186 remains the most powerful F1 car ever made. The turbocharged 1.5-litre inline four-cylinder engine from BMW offered drivers 1,000 BHP. A far cry from the 700 BHP Lewis Hamilton had at his disposal during his 2014 championship winning season.

There’s no doubt that the McLaren MP4/13 is an ugly car. The compressed suspension and grooved tyres are enough to make you wince but that didn’t stop it being the dominant car during the 1998 season. With 9 wins and 12 pole positions in 16 races, McLaren marked to the constructors championship with ease that season and Mika Hakkinen took the driver’s title at a cantor.

The 2014 Mercedes took eleven 1-2 finishes during a very dominant campaign so you could argue that it’s one of the fastest F1 cars ever built. That year’s car was a marvel of engineering but the main feature that gave the German team their edge was the PU106A engine which had its compressor and turbo packaged at opposite ends to provide the aerodynamicists with more room to play with.

With constantly changing regulations, money worries for some of the mid-ranking teams and the loss of tobacco sponsorship over the years, there may be no way for any future car to match up to the performances of the past.
