Star car

A Ferrari with celebrity connections has gone under the hammer for £66,500 at a sale in Silverstone on Saturday.

The rare 2003 Ferrari 575 Maranello used to be owned by guitarist Eric Clapton who sold it to carrot-top broadcaster Chris Evans. Which of the two famous names was the greater lure for the anonymous buyer it is not clear.

Auction manager Guy Loveridge said the vehicle, which he described as being in lovely condition, had fetched more than its guide price.

'Famous name provenance is always a help,' he said. 'It's a great car and we are not surprised that it fetched such a large amount of money.'

The Maranello had been expected to go for somewhere between £58,000 and £66,000 at the auction at Silverstone, the home of British racing.
