Sunday drivers to get cold shoulder

Government plans to close residential roads to vehicles on Sundays to let children play have led to stern rebukes from motoring associations.

Health Minister Anne Milton wants to use a scheme in South America as a model and hopes that it may help in the fight against child obesity.

While in a debate at Westminster, the MP branded the idea adopted by some South American countires as 'outstanding', most motoring and road safety organisations were quick with a cup of scorn to pour over the proposals.

Chairman of the Association of British Drivers' Brian Gregory said: 'It's not so long ago that the government assured us it was ending the war on the motorist. We pay several times over to use our roads, not be banned from them.

'Has Ms Milton also considered that many people drive out with their families for sporting and other healthy leisure activities on Sundays?'
