Tom Sykes takes double victory in World Superbike round at Imola

The British anthem was played twice at the historic Autodromo Dino and Enzo Ferrari circuit at Imola on Sunday, after Tom Sykes took home both race victories and also the standings lead following the seventh round of the 2013 World Superbike championship.

The Kawasaki rider put in two stunning and faultless racing performances at the Italian track, while breaking a number of records during the race weekend, including taking his sixth consecutive Superpole on race tires!

The weather was perfect at Imola for the double header, and in race one, Sykes was sitting in pole position, but when the lights went out he got off to a bad start and fell back to fourth, with Pata Honda’s Jonathan Rea taking the lead followed by an impressive Davide Giugliano on Althea’s privateer Aprilia and Aprilia’s factory riders Sylvain Guintoli and Eugene Laverty.

However Rea’s lead lasted exactly just a few turns as he ran off track at the Villeneuve, which forced him to rejoin in 11th and having to play catch-up.

With Rea’s error Giugliano inherited the lead and it took Sykes another four laps to catch and pass Guintoli and then nose around Giugliano for another lap, before passing him at the Ravizza corner, in what would turn out to be the winning overtake.

Despite a valiant effort by Giugliano to stick with the Kawasaki rider – with Skyes also breaking the existing lap record – the Huddersfield man was uncatchable, as he would cross under the chequered flag with more than a seven second margin on the Aprilia rider.

Completing the podium besides Giugliano, was also Eugene Laverty, as Guintoli’s RSV4 decided to die on him during the fifth lap and giving him his first DNF of the season.

Jonathan Rea provided the race with some excitement after his off track excursion on the first lap. The Pata Honda rider made it to fourth, slicing through the field and was lining up Laverty for his attack on the third to last lap, only to have his CBR1000RR's front betray him and send him crashing into the kitty litter.

Race 2 was another runaway victory for Sykes who led from start-to-finish, that permitted him to take the head of the WSBK standings for the first time in his career, and it was also the first time that a Kawasaki rider has been on the top of the standings in almost twenty years – the last time was Scott Russell in 1994.

After their bad luck in race one, standing next to Sykes in race 2 were Jonathan Rea and Sylvain Guintoli, while lady luck this time turned her head on Davide Giugliano and Eugene Lavery .

The Italian crashed out of second place on lap three while trying to chase down Sykes, and two laps later Laverty would suffer his huge disappointment and also his third DNF of the season.

Guintoli’s DNF and third place at Imola dropped him down to second in the standings, after having held on tooth and nail to the lead since the opening round, despite having only won one race so far this season, compared to Sykes’ five and Laverty’s four.
