Top smear

Top Gear is once again in hot water – this time over claims it gave ’misinformation’ about Tesla’s Roadster electric vehicle.

The American company is suing Top gear for ’lies and misinformation about the Roadster's performance, behaviour and reliability.’

It all started in 2008, when the show featured a race between a Tesla and a conventionally powered Lotus. The Tesla was winning until it suddenly ran out of power, something Tesla claim was a ’misrepresentation.’

The firm also alleges that the show lied about the car’s range, and has listed three other instances of misrepresentation.

Tesla claims to have asked Top Gear to correct the errors, given that the show has been broadcast various times on on other TV channels, as being available on the internet. It told Autoblog: ‘Tesla simply wants Top Gear to stop rebroadcasting this malicious episode and to correct the record, but they've repeatedly ignored Tesla's requests.’

The truth of the allegations aside, the case has provided a welcome boost for the American manufacturer.
