All about touring motorcycles

Touring motorcycles have been designed specifically for touring. To this end, touring motorcycles usually have larger fairings and windshields for better weather protection, bigger fuel tanks, engines with more low-end torque and a more relaxed, upright seating position. Even though all motorcycles can be used to tour with, these characteristics make touring motorcycles better suited for the task.Touring motorcycles can be sub-divided into several categories, specifically full-dress tourers, global tourers and sport tourers.

Full-dress touring motorcycles include famous motorcycles such as the Honda Goldwing, the Yamaha Royal Star Venture and the Harley-Davidson Electra-Glide. Such touring bikes have features not found in most motorcycles such as heated seats, GPS navigation systems, power windshields and airbags. Full-dress touring motorcycles are not designed for use off-road, however.

Global tourers are dual-sport motorcycles designed to make any destination reachable. Therefore they are capable off venturing off-road as well as on. These bikes consequently have high ground clearance, large fuel reserves, large displacement engines with high power output and good reliability, large size and excellent high speed stability. The BMW F800GS, Suzuki V-Strom 1000 and Kawasaki KLR650 are examples of this type.

Sport tourers mix the characteristics of sports bike and touring motorcycles. They combine the ability to engage in long distance cruising at high speed with the great agility and performance associated with sports bikes. They are a great choice for those looking for the comfort and refinement of a touring motorcycle but also one that offers a good dose of handling and speed. The Triumph Sprint, Ducati ST series and Suzuki Katana are examples of sport tourers.
