Toyota production suspended in Japan

Car maker Toyota has suspended all production work at its domestic plants because of difficulties in securing car parts following the earthquake and Tsunami in Japan last Friday

According to a report on the Mainichi Daily News website, Toyota officials have announced the suspension on Monday of its five domestic plants and 12 auto parts plants.

A Toyota official said that the suspension was partly to ensure that workers at the factories are safe. Toyota vehicles are made in the Miyagi and Iwate prefectures, both of which were badly affected by the severe 8.9 – magnitude earthquake.

Nissan also suspended production at its three domestic plants following damage to two of them. Other car makers in the region Honda, Toyo and Sumitomo are expected to follow suit.
