True love is your first car

Half of all motorists will never forget their first car, according to a new poll by Castrol.

And for a quarter of motorists that love extended to giving the car a name, like Egbert, Florence, Mabel or even The Golden Maiden.

The survey of 2,000 drivers found that half the those polled categorised their relationship with their first pair of wheels as a ‘love affair’, with 40 per cent saying they remembered it ‘fondly’.

‘Choosing and buying a first car is a rite of passage. It marks the start of your independence and freedom,’ said motoring commentator, Quentin Willson.

‘Taking the leap to become a car owner for the first time is also a huge financial investment. As the majority of car owners are likely to buy a car before a house, it's also likely to be the largest amount of money that you've ever spent.’

Mr Willson added: ‘My first car was a 1959 Austin Healey Frogeye Sprite called Kermit.’
