UK car production on the rise

New figures reveal a 1.8 percent rise in car manufacturing this June compared with last year, providing hope that GDP figures for the second quarter of 2011 will show some growth.

In May, car manufacturing nose-dived as a result of a shortage of components sourced from earthquake and tsunami-hit Japan. But last month, plants were back at full capacity, producing an impressive 120,036 cars in total.

A spokes person for the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders said: 'UK vehicle manufacturing saw a welcome return to growth in June, with strong demand from key export markets. Sustained investment in research and development, skills and new products by the UK automotive industry is helping to rebalance the economy, but there remain significant challenges. “The economic recovery is still fragile, so government and industry must focus their energies on encouraging growth and maintaining UK competitiveness.'
