Volksvagen Golf Europe's best selling car

The Volkwagen Golf has retained its crown as Europe's best selling car, with 37,847 models sold in July. The VW Polo and Ford's Fiesta came second and third respectively.

The top ten is completed by the Ford Focus in fourth, then the Renault Clio, then the Vauxhall Astra, the Corsa, the VW Passat and finally the Renault Megane and Peugeot 207.

This good news comes against a background of a drop in total sales of 1 percent in July and a total of 1.7 percent decrease for the whole of the year to date.

Gareth Hession, vice-president of research at JATO dynamics, which indertook the research, said: 'While the new car market has been strong in Germany, low sales performances in July for the rest of the big five markets continue to impact the region as a whole.'

'Continued economic uncertainty in the region is likely to have an impact on consumer confidence which could influence sales on the forecourt.'

Sales of the Golf saw a 2.9 per cent rise in July compared to a year earlier, although taken as a whole sales have fallen by 6.1 per cent this year. With sales up by 0.7 per cent, the Polo snatched second place in the market away from the Ford Fiesta.

Out of all the top ten models, six had increased sales during July, but in June this was only achieved by two models whereas only two models achieved this during the month of June.
