VW twincharger set for the chop

Volkswagen’s popular twincharger petrol engine could soon be a thing of the past, according to some well-placed insiders.

The firm’s 1.4-litre engine major claim to fame is that it mixes turbocharging and supercharging - but is reportedly too complex and expensive to produce in the current economic climate.

According to reports in Autocar, engineers at VW now believe that their new turbocharging technology can achieve the same or similar results at a far cheaper cost.

The popular twin charger engine, which is found in numerous VW Group models, won a prize for Engine of the Year in 2009 and 2010 and was then described as ‘a masterstroke of downsizing technology and a real engineering showcase’.

One day you're top of the heap, the next you're consigned to the dustbin of history. Sigh.
