Wake of the quake

The earthquake/tsunami double whammy still has Japan’s motor industry areeling, as it’s been reported that Honda and Toyota are to extend the closure period of their factories.

Toyota allegdly plans to keep a wraps on production at its 18 domestic plants until March 26, while Honda won’t be opening its factory doors until at least March 27.

And, when the car makers do start up production again, there’s a good chance it’ll be only on a temporary basis as parts shortages will ensure that the plants will quickly re-close.

This problem we’ll probably see hit home in on our shores in a couple of weeks. As parts suppliers are still out of action as a result of the disaster, factories that assemble the vehicles have no other option than to sit and wait for the situation to get better.
