Web of intrigue

Mazda have recalled 65,000 units of the Mazda 6 vehicle in North and Central America after it emerged that spiders were getting into the fuel system of the car.

Twenty cases have now been reported of yellow sac spiders finding their way in a vent line of the fuel system and building nests. This could cause presure in the tank to increase which may lead to cracks or even fire.

The car giant has recalled 50,000 units of the Mazda 6 dating from the 2009-10 model year in the US as well as an additional 15,000 from the same period in Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico.

Exactly why the yellow sac spiders are nesting in the car Mazda has no idea, though it confirmed that the pesky arachnaids have thus far caused no accidents.
